The Paraguay River is a huge and important waterway in South America. It flows through Brazil and Paraguay. It also helps mark the borders between several different countries. The river acts as a boundary for Brazil, Bolivia, and Argentina.

This river is the second largest river in the Rio de la Plata Basin. It is also a key part of the country of Paraguay. In fact, the river divides Paraguay into two very different parts. One side is the Gran Chaco, which is a dry area. The other side is a lush, forested region where most people live.

Water flows through the river in a very specific way. It starts in the Mato Grosso state of Brazil. From there, it travels south through the Pantanal wetlands. The Pantanal is the largest tropical wetland in the whole world.

Because the water moves slowly through these wetlands, floods happen later. The peak flood arrives four to six months after the rainy season ends. The river changes its look based on the season too. During low water, the river is warm and cloudy. During the flood season, the water is colder and much clearer.

People have lived near this river for a very long time. The Guarani peoples were the original inhabitants of the upper river. Later, a man named Sebastian Cabot explored it in the 16th century. He was the first European known to find these rivers. For hundreds of years, the river has been a main path for Paraguay. Today, many large barges move goods along the water. The river is a vital link for landlocked nations like Bolivia. It provides a way for them to reach the Atlantic Ocean. This makes the river a very busy corridor for trade.

Many living things call the river home. There are about 350 different species of fish in the river. Many of these fish, like the golden dorado, are very famous.

Most of these fish are types called tetras or catfish. Some fish even travel up the river just to lay their eggs. The river also provides food and jobs for many people. Many fishermen live along the banks to catch fish for markets. However, seasonal flooding can be hard for these families. Sometimes, thousands of people must find temporary shelter when waters rise.

There is also a big debate about the river's future. In 1997, some governments wanted to build more dams. They also wanted to dig out the river to help ships pass. This plan was called the Hidrovia project. Many people worried this would hurt the Pantanal wetlands. A group called Rios Vivos worked to teach others about these risks. Their work helped delay the big project. People still talk about whether the river should be changed for industry. They want to balance making money with protecting nature.
