The Tocantins River is a huge river in Brazil. It is a main water path for the whole country. The name comes from the Tupi language. It means "toucan's beak." This river flows from the south toward the north. It is one of the largest clearwater rivers in South America. The water eventually reaches the Atlantic Ocean. It flows through the Amazon Delta via an eastern channel.

This river flows through four different Brazilian states. These states are Goiás, Tocantins, Maranhão, and Pará. The river even gave its name to the state of Tocantins. That state was formed in 1988 from northern Goiás. The river starts in the mountainous Pireneus district. Its western branch is the Araguaia River. The Araguaia is almost equal to the Tocantins in volume.

Many amazing animals live in the river basin. You can find large mammals like the Amazonian manatee. There are also Araguaian river dolphins and tucuxi dolphins. Large reptiles like the black caiman live in the water. More than 350 kinds of fish live here. Over 175 of these fish are found only in this area. Some fish live in special caves in the upper basin. These cavefish are very rare in the Americas.

Humans have changed the river in many ways. There are seven dams built along the water. The Tucuruí Dam is one of the largest in the world. It was finished in the early 1980s. This dam created a massive artificial lake. It also changed how the river flows. In 2010, a system of locks called Eclusas do Tucuruí was made. These locks help boats travel on the river.

The land around the river looks very different in each place. Some areas have flat valleys made of sand and clay. These valleys sit below very steep bluffs. These bluffs are the edges of high sandstone plateaus. The river has carved deep beds into this rock. In other places, the banks are rocky. Near the ocean, the land becomes a forest-covered plain. This plain is sometimes half covered by water.
