Goiás is a large state in the Central-West region of Brazil.

It is a very busy place with many people living there. There are about 7.05 million people in the state. This makes it the most populous state in its region. The capital city is Goiânia, which is a very fast-growing place.

Most people live in cities like Goiânia or near the Federal District. However, much of the rest of the state is very thinly populated. This means there is a lot of open space between towns.

The land in Goiás is mostly a high plateau. This means the ground is mostly flat and sits high up. The surface stays between 750 and 900 meters above sea level. This high land acts like a divider for three big river systems. To the south, the Paranaíba River flows away. To the east, water flows toward the São Francisco River. In the north, the Araguaia and Tocantins Rivers flow through the state.

These rivers are important, but most are not easy to travel on with big boats.

The weather in Goiás is tropical. The year has a rainy season and a dry season. The dry season lasts from April to September. During the dry months, the Araguaia River level goes down. This exposes sandy beaches for people to see.

Much of the land is covered in a woodland savanna called campo cerrado. You can also find tropical forests near the rivers. If you visit the Chapada dos Veadeiros, you will see canyons and waterfalls.

History in Goiás began in the early 1700s. Pioneers from São Paulo arrived to explore the land. In 1682, a man named Bartolomeu Bueno da Silva found gold in a river. This led to the building of towns like Goiás Velho. Later, the state grew even more in the 1930s. This happened because the new capital, Goiânia, was built.

In the 1950s, the construction of Brasília nearby helped the state grow even faster. In 1988, the northern part of the state became its own state called Tocantins.

Goiás is a leader in many types of work. It is very important for farming and raising animals. The state produces a lot of soy, corn, and wheat.
