Kansas is a landlocked state, which means it has no ocean coasts. It is even considered the geographic center of the lower 48 states. The town of Lebanon is near this center point.

The land in Kansas changes as you move across it. The eastern part has many hills and forests. The middle part is also hilly but has fewer plants.

The western third is part of the Great Plains. This area is mostly flat or has gentle waves in the land. The ground actually rises as you travel from east to west. The highest point is Mount Sunflower, which is in the west.

Many rivers flow through the state. The Missouri River marks part of the northeastern border.

The Kansas River flows for 205 miles before joining the Missouri River. The Arkansas River also flows through the western and southern parts. It has many smaller rivers, called tributaries, that join it.

These rivers help shape the land and provide water. Some parts of the state even have chalk rock badlands.

Long ago, many different Indigenous tribes lived here. The Wichita and the Kansa people were among them.

The name Kansas comes from the Kansa people. European explorers arrived much later. Francisco Vázquez de Coronado explored the area in 1541. Later, the Santa Fe Trail crossed the state.
