Many different industries helped the city grow over time. In the early 1800s, people found salt brines near the river. They heated the salty water over open flames to make salt crystals. This work was very important for the local economy. Later, people found coal and natural gas in the area. These resources helped new jobs grow in the region. These industries led to the rise of chemical manufacturing too.

History shows how the city was built by pioneers. Long ago, leaders like Daniel Boone and William Morris helped establish the area. A man named George Clendenin built Fort Lee in 1787. This fort was located where Brooks Street meets Kanawha Boulevard. The name Charleston might come from Clendenin's father, Charles. The town was officially established by the Virginia General Assembly in 1794.
