English settlers founded the town in 1670. They originally called it Charles Town to honor King Charles II. They first built the settlement at Albemarle Point on the Ashley River. By 1680, they moved the town to its current location. This new spot was better for defense and had a great harbor. It grew so fast it became the fifth-largest city in North America by the 1690s.

Charleston has a very difficult and important history. The city was a primary entry point for the Atlantic slave trade. Many enslaved Africans were brought to this port. In fact, almost half of all enslaved people brought to the United States arrived here.

Local merchants played a large role in this trade. In 2018, the city formally apologized for its part in this history. The city also has a rich Gullah heritage from people brought from the "Rice Coast."

Life in the city has changed many times over the years. In the 1700s, the town faced many hard times. There were outbreaks of yellow fever and malaria.

An earthquake in 1699 caused a fire that destroyed part of the town. Pirates like Blackbeard even visited and raided the city in 1718. Later, the state capital moved to Columbia in 1788. Despite these many changes, the city stayed very important for a long time.

Today, Charleston is a busy place with many different jobs. The Port of Charleston is one of the busiest in the United States.
