The country is divided into seventeen departments and one capital district. Its largest city and capital is Asunción. People can reach the Atlantic Ocean through the Paraná–Paraguay Waterway. This path helps the country connect to the rest of the world.

The history of this land is very long and interesting. For at least a thousand years, the Guaraní people lived in the eastern part.

In the west, nomadic groups lived in a region called the Gran Chaco. Spanish explorers arrived in 1524 and began to change the area. Juan de Salazar de Espinosa founded Asunción in 1537. During the 1700s, Jesuit missions were a major part of life. These missions helped protect Guaraní people and introduced them to European culture.
