Many people call it the War of the Triple Alliance. This name comes from the three countries that fought against Paraguay. These three nations were Argentina, the Empire of Brazil, and Uruguay. This war was the deadliest war between different countries in Latin American history. It changed the borders and the people of the region forever.

Many problems led to the start of this fighting. For a long time, countries in South America argued over land. They did not agree on where one country ended and another began. These arguments started after they became independent from Spain and Portugal.

Brazil and Paraguay also had issues with rivers. Brazil needed to use the Paraguay River to move ships to certain areas. This made the relationship between the two neighbors very tense. Disputes over taxes and river paths made peace hard to keep.

The war began because of trouble in the country of Uruguay. Brazil moved its military into Uruguay to help a specific political group. The leader of Paraguay was Francisco Solano López. He wanted to help his allies in Uruguay.

Because of this, Paraguay broke its diplomatic ties with Brazil. In November 1864, a Paraguayan ship caught a Brazilian ship near Concepción. This event helped start the actual fighting. Soon, Argentina and Uruguay joined the fight against Paraguay. This created the Triple Alliance that fought the war.

Paraguay started the war with a very strong military. They had over 60,000 trained men ready to fight.

They also had 400 cannons for their army. Their navy included 23 steamboats and five other river ships. One of these ships was called the Tacuarí.

Even with these tools, the war became very difficult for Paraguay. After they lost the main battles, they tried a different way to fight. They used guerrilla resistance, which means small groups hiding and attacking. This lasted for 14 months and caused much more destruction.

The war ended in 1870 after many years of struggle. Many people in Paraguay died from battle, hunger, and disease.
