Bolivia and Paraguay fought over the Gran Chaco region. This area is known as the Chaco Boreal. People believed this land held large amounts of petroleum. Because the region was very dry, many called it "The War of Thirst."

Both nations were landlocked, meaning they had no direct access to the ocean. They wanted the Chaco to reach the Atlantic Ocean for trade.

Control of the land was a hard job for both sides.

Both countries had to import many weapons from other places. They bought tools from Europe and the United States. This included machine guns and airplanes.

Because they had to wait for these supplies, the war did not start until 1932. Moving these heavy items through neighboring countries was very difficult for both nations.

The fight began because of old arguments about borders.

Long ago, the two lands had many small disagreements. In 1885, Bolivia started a settlement called Puerto Pacheco. Later, a Paraguayan ship forced them to leave. Small forts, called "fortins," were built along the rivers. In 1927, a patrol leader named Adolfo Rojas Silva was killed. This event made the tension between the two countries much worse. By 1928, more fighting happened at places like Fortín Vanguardia and Fortín Boquerón.

There were many important facts about the two armies.

Paraguay had a much smaller population than Bolivia. In 1932, Paraguay had about 880,000 people. Bolivia had a much larger population of about 2,150,000 people. Even so, Paraguay used a fast way of fighting. They moved quickly to surround the Bolivian troops.

Bolivia had a larger army and better equipment. However, many Bolivian soldiers were used to the high Andes Mountains. They were not used to the dry Chaco region.

The war changed the map of South America forever.

Many people lost their lives during these three years. About 2% of the Bolivian people died in the war. About 3% of the Paraguayan people died as well. The fighting finally ended with a peace conference in Buenos Aires. In July 1938, both countries signed a peace treaty. This agreement gave three-quarters of the Gran Chaco to Paraguay. This ended the long struggle for the dry land.
