The Wadden Sea is a very special place where the land and the sea meet.

It is a shallow area in the southeastern part of the North Sea. This area sits between the European coast and a group of low islands called the Frisian Islands. It is made of tidal flats and wetlands. The word "wad" actually means mudflat in the Dutch and Frisian languages.

This place is a home for many different kinds of living things. Because it is so important, it is a protected site for the whole world.

This landscape changes constantly because of the tides. When the tide is high, the water covers the area. When the tide is low, the mudflats appear.

Waves and currents move sand and mud around. This can even move entire islands. For example, the islands of Vlieland and Ameland have moved east over many years. They lose land on one side and gain it on the other. This constant movement makes the Wadden Sea a place that is always shifting between land and sea.

History shows that this area has been a hard place for people to live. In the past, huge floods caused many deaths. There were the Saint Marcellus' floods in 1219 and 1362. Other big floods happened in 1634 and 1717. These floods were so strong they changed the shape of the coastline. To stay safe, people built many dikes and causeways.

Because of these changes, the Wadden Sea is one of the most human-altered habitats on Earth.

Many animals rely on these waters to survive. Hundreds of thousands of birds like ducks and geese stop here to rest or stay for the winter. You can also find seals, such as harbor and grey seals, living in the area.

Some larger animals like dolphins and porpoises live here too. Even though some species like the European sea sturgeon are rare, people work to bring them back. In the past, even huge whales used these calm waters for feeding and breeding.

Today, many people visit the Wadden Sea for fun. Some go to the islands which have been popular seaside resorts since the 1800s.

Others enjoy mudflat hiking. This is when people walk on the sandy flats when the tide is low.

The area is also great for pleasure boating. Because it is so beautiful and full of life, UNESCO added the Danish part to the World Heritage List in 2014. The Dutch and German parts were added in 2009.
