Nenets Nature Reserve

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Nenets Nature Reserve is a special place in Russia. It is called a zapovednik, which means it is a strict nature reserve.

This area is in the northeast of European Russia. It sits on the coast of the Barents Sea. The reserve also covers the delta of the Pechora River. It is about 800 km northeast of Arkhangelsk. This land is a very important spot for many living things.

Most of the land is flat tundra. About 75% of the reserve is this lowland tundra. Much of it is covered in wetlands and marshes. You can find multicolored mosses and lichens here. The reserve has four main sectors. The largest sector is on the west side of the Pechora River Delta. It reaches along the Zavorot Peninsula into the sea. There is also a sector on the east side of the Pechora.

Many animals use this reserve for important jobs. It is a key stop on a path for birds. These birds fly from Western Europe to nest here. You can see geese, ducks, gulls, and swans. The Bewick's swan is the symbol of the reserve.

Many walruses also use the islands to breed. In 2015, scientists found 600 walruses on Matveyev Island. Other animals like foxes and hares live in the thickets. Scientists have found 26 different kinds of mammals there.

The reserve was formally made in 1997. People created it to protect the land and the water. There are many oil and gas deposits in the region. In 1980, a gas accident happened at the Kumzhinskoye gas field. Gas leaked out for seven years in the Pechora River delta. This made the area need extra protection. Now, the reserve keeps the important wetlands safe.

The weather in this place is quite cold. It has a subarctic climate. This means the summers are very mild. Only one to three months are above 10 degrees Celsius. The winters are very cold and snowy. The coldest month stays below 0 degrees Celsius. Most people cannot visit the reserve easily. It is mostly closed to the public. Scientists and students can visit for learning. You can also join guided birdwatching tours.
