It sits in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The land stretches for about 700 km. To the west, it meets the Kara Sea and Baydaratskaya Bay. To the east, it is bordered by the Gulf of Ob.

The name Yamal comes from the Nenets people. In their language, it means "End of the Land." Many different types of migratory birds live here.

Most of the ground is permafrost. This means the soil stays frozen. Because of this, there are many lakes called thermokarst lakes. The biggest ones are Neito and Yambuto. These lakes sit in the central part of the peninsula. Scientists use tree rings to study the climate history here. This study is called dendrochronology. It helps them see how the environment has changed over thousands of years.

People have lived on this land for a very long time. The Nenets and Khanty people are reindeer herders. They look after about half a million domestic reindeer.

This is one of the best places for traditional nomadic reindeer herding. In 2007, a herder named Yuri Khudi found something amazing. He found the remains of a 37,000-year-old mammoth calf named Lyuba. She was only one month old when she died.

Today, the land is used for big energy projects. The peninsula holds Russia's largest reserves of natural gas. These reserves are estimated at 55 trillion cubic meters.

To move this gas, people built the Obskaya–Bovanenkovo railway. It is 572 km long and was finished in 2011. This is the northernmost railway in the entire world.

Large gas pipelines and bridges are also being built.

Strange things can happen on the frozen ground. In 2014, a large sinkhole appeared. Some people thought a meteorite hit the land. However, experts say it was likely caused by gas pressure. Warming temperatures may cause gas to build up underground. This gas is called methane. Scientists found high amounts of methane near these holes. As of 2015, there were at least five similar craters. Another one appeared in August 2020.
