It sits in the southern part of Liaoning province. This land sticks out into the Yellow Sea. It is located between the Daliao River and the Yalu River. The peninsula covers the city of Dalian. It also includes parts of Yingkou, Anshan, and Dandong. The name Liaodong means "Liao region's east." Today, this name describes the land east of the Daliao River.

This land shapes the water around it in special ways.

To the west, it creates the Liaodong Bay. To the east, it creates the Korea Bay. Both of these bays are part of the Bohai Sea. The peninsula is not flat land. It is part of a long mountain belt. This belt goes north into the Changbai Mountains. The mountains on the peninsula are called the Qianshan Mountains. One famous peak is Dahei Mountain in Dalian.

People have lived on this peninsula for a very long time. Neolithic people from the Xinle culture lived here in prehistoric times. Later, the Gojoseon kingdom ruled the area. In the late 4th century BC, the State of Yan took control. This was known as the Liaodong Commandery. Many different groups ruled the land through the years. These included the Han dynasty and the Tang dynasty. Other groups like the Khitan Liao and the Jin dynasty also held power.

In the late 1800s, the peninsula saw many changes. Many people moved there to find new lives. During a famine in China, 600,000 people landed at Yingkou in 1876. This was part of a movement called Chuang Guandong. The area also became a place of big conflicts.

Japan and China fought in the First Sino-Japanese War. Later, Russia and Japan fought in the Russo-Japanese War. These wars were fought over control of the land.

Control of the peninsula has moved many times due to treaties. After a war in 1895, Japan was given the land. However, Russia, France, and Germany stepped in to change this. Russia then leased the area of Lüshunkou for its navy. This area was known as Port Arthur. Later, Japan took control of a leased territory called Kwantung. After World War II ended, the land returned to China. Today, the Liaodong Peninsula is a unified part of the People's Republic of China.
