The province sits on the northern shore of the Yellow Sea. To the south, it meets the Bohai Sea. The Yalu River flows through the area to mark the border with North Korea.

The name Liaoning comes from the Liao River that runs through the land. It is a place where many different people have lived for a long time.

The land changes as you move across the province. The west has high lands called the Nulu'erhu Mountains. These mountains follow the border with Inner Mongolia. The middle part is mostly flat plains and low basins. Rivers like the Liao and Daliao flow through these flat areas.

The east is much hillier. It contains the Changbai and Qianshan Mountains. These mountains reach into the sea to form the Liaodong Peninsula. The highest point is Mount Huabozi, which stands 1,336 meters tall.

Liaoning has a very long and busy history. Many different groups have ruled this land over the centuries. Long ago, the state of Yan conquered the area around 300 BC. Later, the Khitan Liao dynasty and the Jurchen Jin dynasty held power here. The Ming Empire also built a defense wall called the Liaodong Wall. This was an earth dike with moats to protect the farms.

The Jurchen people later formed the Qing dynasty here.

Many important events happened in Liaoning during the 1900s. The Russo-Japanese War brought huge battles to this land. One battle, the Battle of Mukden, was the largest land battle at that time.

The province has also changed its name several times. It was once called Fengtian Province. In 1929, it officially became Liaoning. The current name was restored in 1954 after merging different regions.

Today, Liaoning is a major center for industry and science. It was one of the first provinces in China to build big factories. For example, the city of Anshan has a huge iron and steel complex.
