It sits in a very important spot near several neighbors. To the east, it borders Russia and North Korea. Other parts of China, like Heilongjiang, Liaoning, and Inner Mongolia, surround it on other sides. The province is known for its many natural riches and its history. Its name comes from a Manchu phrase, "girin ula," which means "along the river."

The land in Jilin has many different shapes and feels. In the southeast, the land is very high up. This is where the Changbai Mountains run through the region. The highest point is Paektu Mountain. The land drops down gently as you move toward the northwest. The weather has a continental monsoon climate. This means the winters are long and cold, while the summers are short and warm.

Many different groups of people lived in this area throughout history. In ancient times, people like the Xianbei, Sushen, and Mohe lived here. Later, many different kingdoms and dynasties ruled the land. During the Qing Dynasty, much of the area was controlled by a general. After 1860, many Han Chinese migrants moved to the region from places like Shandong. By the start of the 20th century, they became the main ethnic group.
