The city works as a busy hub for trade and transport. Its large port is the second most important for shipping in North Korea. This port helps the country trade with places like Russia and Japan.

The city also has a special tram system for moving people around. It is one of only three cities in the country with trams. A local factory even builds the trams and trolleybuses used on the streets. Many factories work here to make things like cloth, rubber, and even buses.

Chongjin has a very long history that goes back a long time. Archeologists found traces of people living near the Tumen River from the Paleolithic period. Many different groups lived in this region in ancient times. Later, the city was a small fishing village. It changed a lot when it came under Japanese rule. During the Russo-Japanese War from 1904 to 1905, Japanese forces used the city as a supply base. By 1930, a large steel mill was built in the town.

There are many important facts to know about this place. The name Chongjin means "clear river crossing." The city is divided into seven different wards, such as Sinam and Sunam. It is also a place where people go to learn. There are many colleges, like the Chongjin University of Technology.

It is also unusual because it hosts foreign consulates from China and Russia. This is a rare thing to see in North Korea.

Life in Chongjin has had many different stages. In the 1990s, the city suffered during a hard time called a famine. Because there was not much farm land, many people struggled to find food. The city also faces air pollution because of all the heavy industry.
