Analysts suggested the port lacked experience with large warships. The port usually handles smaller vessels like cargo ships and fishing boats. In 1969, a US Navy plane was shot down southeast of the city. This event resulted in the death of all 31 occupants. It remains the deadliest plane crash in North Korean territory. 
Chongjin is also a major center for higher education. It hosts many specialized institutions, such as the Chongjin University of Technology. Other schools include the Chongjin University of Medicine and the Chongjin Mine University. There are also schools for gifted students, like the Chongjin No.1 Senior Middle School. The city connects to the rest of the country via the Pyongra Line. This electric railway links the city to the capital, Pyongyang. Through its ports, rails, and factories, Chongjin remains a vital link in the nation's system.
