Chongjin is a major industrial and port city in North Korea. It serves as the capital of North Hamgyong Province. The city sits on the country's northeastern coast near the East Korea Bay.

It is the third-largest city in North Korea by population. The Susong River flows through the urban area. The city also contains the Sodu Stream and Mount Komal. Many people call Chongjin the "City of Iron." This nickname reflects its massive role in producing steel and fiber.

The city's industrial mechanism relies on heavy manufacturing and shipping. Large facilities like the Kimchaek Iron & Steel plant process raw materials. Other sites include a locomotive plant and a rubber factory. The Chongjin Thermal Power Plant provides electricity to the area. It has an estimated generation capacity of 150 MW. The plant uses coal for its energy production.

This heavy industry makes Chongjin a "black spot" for air pollution. Despite its importance, a lack of resources often handicaps these activities.

Chongjin is divided into seven administrative wards, known as kuyŏk. These include Ch'ŏngam, P'ohang, Puyun, Ranam, Sinam, Songp'yŏng, and Sunam. The city functions as a regional center for transport and education. It is one of only three North Korean cities with a tram system. Local factories actually manufacture these trams and trolleybuses. The city also hosts foreign consulates from China and Russia. This is a rare occurrence within North Korea.

The history of the region stretches back to the Paleolithic period. Archaeological findings near the Tumen River show ancient human traces. Many different kingdoms, such as Goguryeo, once held this territory. For much of its modern history, Chongjin was a small fishing village. This changed during the Japanese annexation of Korea. During the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905, Japanese forces used it as a supply base. In 1930, the Seishin Iron and Steel Works was built.

By 1940, the area was elevated to city status.

Chongjin's significance is tied to its role in international trade. Its port is the second most economically important in the country. It serves as a vital trade base for Russia and Japan. The city is estimated to hold a 24 percent share of North Korea's foreign trade. However, the city has faced severe hardships. During the famine of the 1990s, death rates may have reached 20 percent. This happened because the area has very little arable land for farming. The city also saw civil unrest in 2008 due to rising grain prices.

Recent events highlight both the city's industry and its challenges. In May 2025, a new navy destroyer suffered an accident during a launch. Analysts suggested the port lacked experience with large warships. The port usually handles smaller vessels like cargo ships and fishing boats. In 1969, a US Navy plane was shot down southeast of the city. This event resulted in the death of all 31 occupants. It remains the deadliest plane crash in North Korean territory.

Chongjin is also a major center for higher education. It hosts many specialized institutions, such as the Chongjin University of Technology. Other schools include the Chongjin University of Medicine and the Chongjin Mine University. There are also schools for gifted students, like the Chongjin No.1 Senior Middle School. The city connects to the rest of the country via the Pyongra Line. This electric railway links the city to the capital, Pyongyang. Through its ports, rails, and factories, Chongjin remains a vital link in the nation's system.
