Wonsan is a significant port city and naval base in North Korea. It serves as the provincial capital of Kangwon Province. The city is situated on the eastern side of the Korean Peninsula. It sits on the westernmost part of the Sea of Japan. This location makes it an excellent natural port for maritime activities.

The city is surrounded by diverse geography. To the west lie Mt. Changdok and Mt. Nap'al. Mount Kŭmgang is also located near the city. More than 20 small islands flank the coast, including Ryo Island and Hwangt'o Island.

The history of Wonsan stretches back to ancient times. Evidence shows humans lived here during the Neolithic and Bronze ages. Archaeologists found pottery in the Chungpyongdong area from these periods. Under the Goguryeo kingdom, the area was called Eo eul mae. It later became part of the Silla kingdom in 681. Over many centuries, the region held several different names. It was known as Yongju and Uiju during various eras. A fortress was even constructed there in 1108.

Modern history changed the city's role significantly. The Russian Empire surveyed the area in 1854. Japanese forces opened the port for trade in 1880. During Japanese rule, the city was called Gensan. It became a major center for distributing products. The opening of railway lines in 1914 connected Wonsan to P'yongyang and Seoul. This infrastructure helped the city grow into an industrial hub. It became an important point for trade between Korea and Japan.

However, the Korean War brought extreme destruction to Wonsan. American and South Korean troops captured the city in October 1950. It later fell under Chinese control in December 1950. The city faced intense bombardment from United Nations forces. This period included the Blockade of Wonsan. The American navy maintained a continuous siege from 1951 to 1953. This was the longest siege in modern American naval history. By the end of the war, the city was a vast shell.

Today, Wonsan is undergoing massive economic and physical changes. The city has a population of approximately 329,207 people. It hosts several major industries and factories. These include a shipyard and a cement factory. The 4 June Rolling Stock Works is a massive railway factory. The government also plans a $582 million redevelopment of the city center. This project involves demolishing and rebuilding much of the area. New structures will include a 17-story International Finance Centre.

Tourism is a major focus for the region's future. The Wonsan Special Tourist Zone covers more than 400 square kilometers. This zone includes 10 sand beaches and 680 tourist attractions. It also features four mineral springs and several natural lakes. The Masikryong Ski Resort was built in 2016 to attract visitors.

Another popular spot is Songdowon, a scenic area by the sea. It is famous for its white sand and thick pine forests. The name Songdowon describes how the trees look like waves from above. The city also features the Kalma Peninsula for new resort development.

Transportation in Wonsan is diverse and expanding. The city is served by the Kangwon Line of the Korean State Railway. It also sits at the end of a major tourist motorway. For local travel, a trolleybus system has operated since 1988. New lines were added recently to reduce fossil fuel use. A new tram line was also completed in late 2020. For air travel, Wonsan Airport serves both civilians and the military. The airport features dual runways and even an underground air force runway.
