Tumen River

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Tumen River is a significant waterway located in northeast Asia. It serves as a natural boundary for three different nations. The river separates China from North Korea along its upper reaches. Later, it forms the border between North Korea and Russia. The river eventually flows into the Sea of Japan. It has a large drainage basin that covers a wide area. This river is a vital geographic feature for the region.

The river begins its journey on the slopes of Mount Paektu. This mountain sits on the border between China and North Korea. From these high slopes, the water travels through several provinces. It forms the southern border of China's Jilin Province. In North Korea, it marks the northern borders of Ryanggang and North Hamgyong provinces. The river follows a path that connects these different political territories.

The river is known by several different names. Its name likely comes from the Mongolian word "tümen." This word means "ten thousand" or a "myriad." In Russia, the river is called the Tumannaya. This Russian name literally means "foggy." These names reflect the diverse cultures living near the water. The river connects many different linguistic and historical traditions.

History has shaped the borders of the Tumen River. In the 1860 Treaty of Peking, the Qing dynasty ceded an island to Russia. This island was part of the Primorsky Maritimes, also called East Tartary. This land is now known as Noktundo. It was once an island but is now effectively a peninsula at the mouth of the river. In 1990, the Soviet Union and North Korea signed a border treaty. This treaty set the border through the center of the river. This left the former island territory on the Russian side. South Korea does not recognize this specific treaty.

Many important towns and structures sit along the riverbanks. In 1938, the Japanese constructed the Tumen River Bridge. This bridge is located where the Quan River meets the Tumen. It sits between the villages of Quanhe and Wonjong. In China, the towns of Tumen and Nanping are located here. In North Korea, people live in the towns of Onsong and Hoeryong. In 1995, five nations signed agreements to create the Tumen River Economic Development Area. This area includes China, Mongolia, Russia, North Korea, and South Korea.

The river supports a unique ecosystem and local industry. Several fish species are endemic to the Tumen River. This means they are found only in this specific river system. Examples include the bighead gudgeon and the Tumen lenok. To help the fishing industry, China took action in 2016. They released 800,000 salmon seedlings into the water. This was done to meet the growing demand for sea products in the region.

The Tumen River is physically different from the Amnok River. The Amnok River is broad, deep, and moves very swiftly. In contrast, the Tumen is much narrower and shallower. These physical traits make the Tumen a preferred crossing point for refugees. Some people cross the river by swimming short distances. Others cross the river on foot when it freezes in the winter. Because the river freezes, it allows for dry crossings across the ice.

The river also holds deep emotional and social significance. It has been a site of conflict, such as the Battle of Lake Khasan. These events are remembered in culture, like the song "Tearful Tumen River." This song is an ode to families separated by the Korean War. The humanitarian crises near the river were also shown in the 2010 film "Dooman River." For many, the river is more than just water; it is a symbol of history and human struggle.
