Tumen River

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Tumen River is a long river in northeast Asia. It flows through a very special part of the world. This river acts as a border for three different countries. It sits between China, North Korea, and Russia. The river starts high up on the slopes of Mount Paektu. From there, it travels all the way to the Sea of Japan.

This river has many different names and meanings. Its name comes from a Mongolian word meaning "ten thousand." In Russia, people call it Tumannaya. This name means "foggy" in their language. The river flows through several important areas. It forms the southern border of Jilin Province in China. It also marks the northern borders of two North Korean provinces. These are North Hamgyong and Ryanggang.

People have lived and worked near this river for a long time. In 1938, the Japanese built the Tumen River Bridge. This bridge sits where the Quan River meets the Tumen. There are many towns along the water. In China, there are towns called Tumen and Nanping. In North Korea, people live in Hoeryong and Onsong. In 1995, five different nations signed agreements for this area. They wanted to create a special economic development area.

Life in the river is full of interesting facts and numbers. Many special fish live in these waters. You can find the Tumen lenok and the bighead gudgeon there. In 2016, China released 800,000 salmon seedlings into the river. They did this to help the local fishing industry grow. The river is also different from the Amnok River. The Amnok is very deep and moves fast. The Tumen is much narrower and shallower.

Sometimes, the river is a place of great difficulty for people. Because it is shallow, some people try to cross it on foot. In the winter, the river freezes into solid ice. This allows for dry crossings across the surface. Many refugees from North Korea have used this path. They often wait for many months to find the right time. Some people even use the river to find food or money. The river is a place of both life and hard journeys.
