Many things give the river its names. In Chinese, Yalu means "duck-green." This name comes from an old book from the Tang dynasty. It says the water looked like the head of a mallard duck. The Korean name is Amnok. Some people think the name comes from the Manchu word "yalu ula." In Manchu, that word means the boundary between two countries. Other people think the name comes from two upper branches. These branches are called "Ap" and "Nok."

History has happened along these river banks for a long time. Long ago, the Korean kingdom of Goguryeo rose to power here. The old capital of that kingdom was at the city of Ji'an. The river has been a place for many battles. These include the Battle of the Yalu River in 1894. There was also a battle in 1904 during the Russo-Japanese War. During the Korean War, many bridges across the river were destroyed. Only one bridge remains today. It is called the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge.

The river is a busy place for nature and people. There are about 205 islands in the water. A treaty in 1962 split these islands between the two nations. North Korea has 127 islands and China has 78 islands. The river gets water from many other rivers. These include the Ai and Hun rivers from China. It also gets water from the Changjin and Hochon rivers. The area where the river meets the sea is a special place for birds.
