It sits between mainland China and the Korean Peninsula. This sea is part of the Western Pacific Ocean. You can think of it as the northwestern part of the East China Sea. The sea includes the Bohai Sea in the northwest. It also includes the Korea Bay in the northeast.

Many big rivers flow into these waters. The Yellow River and the Hai River flow into the Bohai Sea. The Yalu River flows into the Korea Bay.

This sea gets its name from its color. Large rivers carry a lot of sand and silt into the water. This sediment gives the sea a golden-yellow look.

The sea is not very deep. On average, it is only 44 meters deep. The deepest part reaches about 152 meters. The sea floor is mostly made of sand and silt. This material comes from the rivers and from sand storms. The water is part of a flooded continental shelf. This shelf formed about 10,000 years ago when sea levels rose.

Weather in the Yellow Sea changes with the seasons. Winters are cold and dry. Strong winds called monsoons blow from the north from November to March. In the north, the water can get close to freezing. This creates patches of drift ice on the surface.

Summers are warm and wet. Typhoons often happen between June and October. The water temperature in the south is warmer. It stays around 24 degrees Celsius in the summer.

Many living things call this sea home. The water is rich in seaweed, like kelp. There are many types of fish, such as squid and prawns.

The sea is a vital stop for migratory birds. At least two million birds pass through during their travels. They use the intertidal mudflats to rest. Some animals like spotted seals live there too. Large whales used to be very common in these waters.

Many people live near the coasts of the Yellow Sea.

People have used the sea for fishing for many centuries. They catch many species, including sea bream and mackerel. The sea is also important for ships. There are many large ports in China and South Korea. Cities like Dalian, Tianjin, and Incheon are busy places. Ships use these ports to move goods across the ocean.
