The Sea of Japan is a large body of water in East Asia.

It sits between the Japanese islands and the mainland of the Russian Far East. To the west, you will find the Korean Peninsula. The sea is shaped a bit like a carrot. It is wide in the south and gets narrower toward the north.

It is mostly closed off from the Pacific Ocean. This makes it a marginal sea. Because it is so enclosed, the water does not have many tides. This is a lot like the Mediterranean Sea.

The sea stays mostly separate from the big ocean. It connects to other waters through five shallow paths called straits. These include the Tsugaru Strait and the Korea Strait.

Because these paths are shallow, it is hard for water to move in and out. This isolation affects the salt levels and the types of animals that live there. However, the water has a lot of dissolved oxygen. This helps many living things grow very well. Because of this, fishing is the most important job for people in the region.

Many explorers traveled across these waters in the past. For a long time, the sea helped protect Japan from land invasions. In the 1700s, Russian explorers mapped the area. A Frenchman named Jean-François de Galaup traveled through a strait named after him. In the 1800s, many ships from America and Britain cruised the sea. Some of these ships were whaling ships. They looked for right whales and humpback whales.

Between 1847 and 1892, many of these ships entered through the Korea Strait. They often left by passing through the La Pérouse Strait.

The sea has three main deep areas called basins. The Japan Basin is in the north and is the deepest part. The Yamato Basin is in the southeast. The Tsushima Basin is in the southwest and is the shallowest.

The sea has a surface area of about 970,000 square kilometers. It can be very deep, reaching a maximum depth of about 3,700 meters. The coastline is very long. Most of that coastline belongs to Russia. The sea also has underwater ridges. One example is the Yamato Ridge, which is made of volcanic rocks like basalt.

People often disagree about what to name this sea. This is called a naming dispute. In English, the most common name is the Sea of Japan. Japan says this name has been used since the early 1800s. However, South Korea says the name "East Sea" was used a long time ago. North Korea calls it the "East Sea of Korea."

Because of these different views, different countries use different names on their maps. Even international groups like the IHO have had to work on how to label these waters in digital systems.
