This sea is almost closed off from the Pacific Ocean. It connects to the ocean through five narrow paths called straits. These straits are quite shallow. Because the water is mostly trapped, it does not move much. This means there are very few tides. The water also has a lot of oxygen in it. This helps many sea animals grow well. Because of this, fishing is a very big job for people in this area.

There is a long debate about what to call this sea. Many people use the name "Sea of Japan." However, South Korea calls it the "East Sea." North Korea calls it the "East Sea of Korea." Different countries use different names.

Long ago, the sea was different. It was once part of the land. Over a long time, the land broke apart. This made the sea open up. The sea has three main deep parts called basins. One is the Japan Basin. It is the deepest part of the sea.
