It sits northwest of Norway. It is between the North Sea and the Greenland Sea. This sea formed 250 million years ago. At that time, two huge plates of Earth moved apart. This made the sea wider and deeper.

Warm water flows in from the Atlantic Ocean. This is called the North Atlantic Current. This warm water helps keep the sea ice-free all year. This is different from the cold Arctic seas. The warm water also helps Norway have mild winters. Many fish, like cod, visit these waters to spawn. Spawning is when fish lay their eggs.
