The Korea Strait is a busy sea passage in East Asia. It sits between the Korean Peninsula and the islands of Japan.

This water connects the East China Sea and the Yellow Sea to the Sea of Japan. To the north lies the southern coast of Korea. To the south are the Japanese islands of Kyūshū and Honshū. The strait is not just one big open space. Tsushima Island sits right in the middle of it. This island splits the water into two separate parts. One part is the Western Channel. The other part is the Tsushima Strait, also called the Eastern Channel.

The water in the strait has many different features. The Western Channel is narrower than the Eastern Channel. It is also much deeper, reaching up to 227 meters. On average, the whole strait is about 90 to 100 meters deep. A warm branch of the Kuroshio Current flows through here. People sometimes call this the Tsushima Current. It starts near the Japanese islands and moves through the Sea of Japan. The water can change a lot in its saltiness. This is because of low-salinity water coming from Korea and China.

Many people and things move through these waters every day. Many international shipping lanes pass through the strait. These ships carry goods to many important ports. Passenger ferries also travel many routes across the sea. Some ferries run from Busan and Geoje in South Korea. They go to Japanese cities like Fukuoka, Tsushima, Shimonoseki, and Hiroshima. Other ferries connect Jeju Island to the Korean mainland. Both Japan and South Korea allow ships to pass through freely. This helps keep trade moving between the two countries.

History has left many marks on this sea. In the 6th century, the Baekje people brought Buddhism to Japan across these waters. Much later, in 1274 and 1281, Mongol and Korean fleets tried to invade Japan. These fleets caused great damage to Tsushima Island. In 1905, a big naval battle happened between Japan and Russia. This was called the Battle of Tsushima. More recently, the Battle of Korea Strait happened in June 1950. This was one of the first naval battles of the Korean War. It took place near Busan when a North Korean ship was sunk.

Looking to the future, people have big ideas for this area. Some have talked about building a Japan–Korea Undersea Tunnel. This would be a way to connect the two countries under the sea. It would be similar to the Channel Tunnel under the English Channel. This tunnel would link France and the United Kingdom. People have discussed this idea for many decades. Even now, the strait remains a vital link in East Asia. It connects many lands, people, and histories together.
