This island is part of the Sakhalin Oblast region. About 500,000 people live on the island today. Most of these people are Russians.

Long ago, different groups of people lived here first. These groups were the Ainu, the Oroks, and the Nivkhs.

These people used stone tools and fishing nets. They even used bronze a long time ago. They lived on the island during the Stone Age.

Many powerful lands have wanted to own Sakhalin. China, Russia, and Japan all made claims to it. The name Sakhalin comes from a Manchu word. This word means "black" and refers to a river.

In the past, the Qing dynasty from China had influence here. They collected tribute like animal furs from the people. The Ainu people sometimes gave gifts to Chinese leaders. These gifts included marten pelts and silk uniforms.

Ownership of the island changed many times in history. In 1875, Japan gave its claims to Russia. Later, the Russo-Japanese War changed things again. In 1905, the island was split into two parts. Southern Sakhalin went to Japan for a while.

Japan ruled the whole island from 1918 to 1925. Finally, Russia took the whole island in 1945. This happened during the final days of World War II.

Today, Sakhalin is a very important place in Russia. It is known for its natural beauty and resources. You might see a gray whale in the sea.
