Sakhalin is a massive island located in Northeast Asia.

It is the largest island in the country of Russia. The island sits within the West Pacific Ocean. It acts as a physical divider between two different bodies of water. The Sea of Okhotsk lies to its east. The Sea of Japan is located to its southwest.

Today, the island is part of the Sakhalin Oblast. It has a population of roughly 500,000 people. Most of these residents are Russians.

The island's name has deep roots in the Manchu language. It comes from the word *Sahaliyan*. This word means "black" and refers to the Amur River.

The Manchus also called it *Sagaliyan ula angga hada*. This translates to "Island at the Mouth of the Black River." Other names have existed throughout history. The Ainu people called it *Yankemosir*, meaning "land of the mainland." European travelers in the 18th century sometimes called it "Tschoka."

Indigenous peoples have inhabited the island since the Neolithic Stone Age.

Archaeologists have found flint implements and polished stone hatchets there. They have also found primitive pottery and stone fishing weights. Three main groups lived on the island. The Ainu lived in the southern half. The Oroks lived in the central region. The Nivkhs lived in the north.

These groups had complex relationships with mainland empires.

The Ming dynasty of China exercised influence over the island. They used a system for subjugated peoples to manage the region. Between 1409 and 1411, the Ming established a military commission near the Amur River. They recruited local headmen for administrative posts. These leaders held titles like assistant commander. In return for tribute, the Ming awarded them silk uniforms. This created a hereditary system where titles passed down through families. Some Nivkh women even married Han Chinese Ming officials.

The Manchu Qing dynasty later asserted more direct control. They established a fur-tribute system for the inhabitants. The Qing sent officials to the island every year to collect tribute. They also presented awards to the local leaders. By 1732, 148 households were registered as tribute bearers.

During the reign of the Qianlong Emperor, a trade post existed at Delen. Mamiya Rinzō recorded that 500 to 600 people visited the market there. This period saw a strong connection between the island and Chinese administration.

Ownership of Sakhalin has been highly contested for many centuries. China, Russia, and Japan have all made claims to the territory. In 1875, Japan ceded its claims to Russia. This was part of an exchange for the northern Kuril Islands. However, the Russo-Japanese War changed the map again in 1905. The island was divided between the two powers. Southern Sakhalin became part of Japan.

Japan later ruled the entire island from 1918 to 1925.

The modern borders were settled during World War II. Russia seized the Japanese portion of the island in 1945. Russia has held all of Sakhalin and the Kurils since that time. Japan no longer claims Sakhalin, though it still claims the southern Kuril Islands. In 1949, many Ainu people moved to Hokkaido. This happened when Japanese civilians were displaced from the island. Today, the island is a vital part of the Russian economy.
