The river begins high in the Bayan Har Mountains. From there, it flows mostly toward the east. It travels through a big loop called the Ordos Loop. This loop goes through the Ordos Plateau and Inner Mongolia. Finally, the river flows across the North China Plain. It empties into the Bohai Sea.

The river gets its name from its color. The water looks yellow because of sediment. Sediment is fine dirt that flows in the water. The river picks up this dirt from the Loess Plateau. This process happens as the river moves along its path.

The river basin was the birthplace of ancient Chinese civilization. Some stories say the Xia dynasty began on its banks around 2100 BC. Tribes may have united near the river to fight frequent floods. This helped them build a strong society together.

History shows the river can be both helpful and hard. It provides fertile soil for growing food. However, it has also caused many floods. One estimate says there were 1,593 floods between 595 BC and 1946 AD.

Because of this, people have two names for it. They call it "China's Pride" and "China's Sorrow." The river helps life grow, but it can also be very dangerous. These floods have caused a lot of damage over the years.

Many people rely on the Yellow River today. About 120 million people live in the river basin. Over 420 million people live in the nearby provinces. They use the river as a source of water. The basin holds 13 percent of the farmland in China.

Rainfall in this area is very uneven. Since the 1970s, the amount of water and sediment has dropped a lot. Sometimes the river even stops reaching the sea. China is now working on a large project to help the water supply.

Scientists believe the river formed a long time ago. It likely began when the Tibetan Plateau rose up.
