The Yellow River is in China. It is the second-longest river there.

It starts in the Bayan Har Mountains. Then it flows east toward the Bohai Sea.

The river has a yellow color. This happens because of dirt in the water. The water picks up silt from the Loess Plateau. Silt is fine dirt that stays in the river. This river was the birthplace of ancient Chinese life.

Many people live near the river. About 120 million people live in the river basin. Over 420 million people live in nearby provinces. They use the river for water. The river also helps people grow food on farm land.

But the river can be dangerous. It has flooded many times in history. One study counted 1,593 floods over many years. Floods happen when silt builds up on the river floor. This can make the river break its banks.

Sometimes the river even changes its path. People call it "China's Sorrow" because of these floods. They also call it "China's Pride" because it helps them live.
