Five smaller rivers join to make the Hai River. These include the Ziya River and the Yongding River. Two canals also join the river. These canals are part of the Grand Canal. The Grand Canal links the Hai River to the Yangtze River. It even connects to the Yellow River.

The river water is very muddy. It carries fine soil in the water. This mud can cause big floods. The cities of Beijing and Tianjin sit near the river. Floods in these cities can cause much loss. People built new paths to move extra water. They also built reservoirs to help.

Today, the river has less water than before. This is due to cities and factories growing. Some parts of the river are dry most of the year. This can make the water dirty. A new project may help bring more water to the area.
