The Grand Canal is a very long path of water. It is the longest man-made waterway in the world.

This system of canals links many rivers and lakes in China. It helps boats move goods between the north and the south.

People built parts of it a long time ago. Some parts began in the 5th century BC. Later, Emperor Yang of the Sui dynasty finished a large part. He wanted to link the rich south to the north.

This helped move grain to feed people and armies.

Moving boats up hills was once hard. In the 10th century, an engineer named Qiao Weiyue invented the pound lock. A pound lock is a tool to change water levels.

It lets boats move to higher or lower water. This made travel much easier.

Today, the canal is still important. Large boats called barges carry heavy goods.
