This network connects many big rivers and lakes across North and East China. It acts like a giant highway for boats to travel. For a long time, it helped move goods between the north and south. It is now recognized as a World Heritage Site.

Moving boats along the canal works by connecting different sections of water. The main part is called the Jing–Hang Grand Canal. It links Beijing in the north all the way to Hangzhou in the south. This long path is split into six main subsections.

One section is the Jiangnan Canal, which loops around Lake Tai. Another is the Inner Canal, which goes through Gaoyou Lake. The Northern Canal finishes the trip by going from Tianjin to Beijing.

Building the canal took many hundreds of years. The oldest parts were finished in the early 5th century BC. These early paths helped the states of Wu and Yue move supplies.

Later, Emperor Yang of the Sui dynasty finished a huge network in 609. He wanted to connect the fertile south to his capital at Luoyang. This helped feed his armies in the north. However, the hard work required to build it caused many rebellions.

There are many important facts about how the canal changed over time. In the 10th century, an engineer named Qiao Weiyue invented the pound lock. A pound lock is a tool that helps boats move between different water levels.

This made it much easier for ships to climb higher ground. During the Tang dynasty, the city of Yangzhou became a huge center for trade. By the year 735, many tons of grain were shipped every year. The canal even helped move water through the South-North Water Diversion Project.

Today, the Grand Canal still connects to things we see in our world. Even though we have railways and highways, the canal is still busy. Large boats called barges carry heavy goods along the southern parts.
