It is 24.7 km long and links two major rivers. The canal connects the Vistula river to the Oder river. It does this by flowing through the Brda and Noteć rivers. This waterway is a key part of the Vistula-Oder Waterway. That long route is 294.3 km long in total. It helps connect the Atlantic Ocean to the Baltic Sea.

Because the land is not flat, the canal uses locks. A lock is a chamber that helps boats change height. The canal uses six locks to manage the level difference. The water flows from the Brda river into the canal. From there, it goes through Nakło nad Notecią. It then follows the Noteć and Warta rivers. Finally, the water reaches the Oder River.

Building the canal was a huge job that started in 1772. King Frederick II of Prussia ordered the project. Many people helped finish the work by 1775. About 8,000 workers came from places like Saxony and Czechia. Sadly, 2,000 workers died from fever and dysentery. The canal had its official opening on 14 June 1774.

Over the years, the canal has seen many changes. Between 1795 and 1801, a man named Ernst Conrad Peterson rebuilt locks. He used bricks instead of sandstone for the first time. Later, from 1840 to 1852, workers built huge granite-brick locks. These were the Śluza Prądy and Osowa Góra locks. By 1858, about 4,000 boats used the canal every year. After 1885, steam ships also began to use the path.

Today, the canal is a special part of history. It is listed on the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship Heritage List. This happened on 30 November 2005. You can see old parts of the canal in a natural park.

The canal helps us understand how people moved goods long ago. It shows how humans can connect different rivers to travel. It remains a very important piece of the international Waterway E70.
