Lingqu

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Lingqu is a long canal in China. A canal is a man-made path for water. This one is very special. It was the first canal to join two river valleys. It connects the Xiang River to the Li River. This lets boats travel from Northern China to the south. This path helps boats reach the Pearl River Delta.

A ruler named Qin Shi Huang ordered its build. He was the first emperor of the Qin ruling family. He wanted to attack tribes in the south. A man named Shi Lu designed the canal. It is a contour canal. This means it gets water from the Xiang River.

The canal also helps save water. It moves up to one third of the Xiang water to the Li. Long ago, people added flash locks to the canal. These are parts that help control water. By the year 825 AD, there were thirty-seven flash locks. Later, people used pound locks. These are also parts that help boats move. The canal is still in very good shape today. It is on a list for special world sites.
