It was built to help move coal. Francis Egerton, the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, owned coal mines. He wanted to move coal to Manchester. Before the canal, moving coal was slow and costly.

The Duke hired an engineer named James Brindley. Brindley helped design the canal. He made a plan to cross the River Irwell. To do this, he built a stone aqueduct. An aqueduct is a bridge that carries water. This allowed boats to travel over the river.

Brindley also helped build a tunnel at Worsley. This was an underground canal. It helped drain the mines. It also helped move coal to the surface. One horse could pull a boat with much more coal than a cart.

Later, the canal was extended to Runcorn. To reach the River Mersey, workers built ten locks. A lock is a part of a canal that helps boats move up or down. This made the canal a great success. Today, people use the canal for fun in small boats.
