It crosses the River Severn in England. It was the first major bridge in the world made of cast iron. This material is very strong when it is pressed down.

A man named Thomas Farnolls Pritchard designed the bridge. He wanted a single span to cross the deep gorge. This allowed tall ships to pass underneath.

The bridge used 377 tons of iron. It is made of almost 1,700 parts. These parts were made to fit together like wood. Builders used joints like dovetails to lock them in place.

Building it was not easy. The banks of the river were not steady. The area had many landslides.
