He was very good with a sword. At that time, the Qin state was very strong. King Zheng of Qin wanted to rule all of China. He began to take over many other lands.

Jing Ke worked for Prince Dan of the Yan state. Prince Dan wanted to stop the Qin king. He made a plan with Jing Ke. Jing Ke would visit the king as a guest. He would bring a map as a gift. He hid a sharp, poisoned dagger inside the map scroll.

Jing Ke went to the palace in 227 BC. He unrolled the map to show the king. Then, he grabbed the king and tried to attack. The king moved away quickly. A doctor threw a medicine bag at Jing Ke. This helped the king get away. The king used his own sword to fight back. Jing Ke was hurt and died. After this, the Qin army took over the Yan state. Many people still tell this story today.
