Players use their feet to move a ball. They cannot use their hands. In some versions, they try to kick the ball through a hoop. In other versions, players take turns kicking the ball. They must stay within set limits. If a player kicks the ball too far, they lose points. The player with the highest score wins.

Long ago, the balls were stuffed with feathers. During the Tang dynasty, people made new balls. These new balls were filled with air. This change made the game better.

Cuju was used to train soldiers. It was also played for fun in big cities. Even emperors played the game in their palaces. Some people even became professional players. They made a living by playing for others. The game spread to Japan and Korea too. In Japan, a similar game is called kemari.
