Long ago, traders from Portugal brought cards to Japan. This happened in the mid-16th century. Japanese makers soon made their own versions. These were called Tenshō karuta.

People made many different kinds of cards. Some cards use flower designs. These are called Hanafuda. Other cards show monsters from old stories. These are called Obake karuta.

Many karuta games are about being fast. In some games, you must grab a card quickly. You try to beat your opponent to the card.

Children often play these games in school. There is also a game called Uta-garuta. In this game, players use cards with poems. One person reads a poem out loud. Then, players race to find the right card. This game is often played on New Year's Day. Some people even enter big contests to show their skill. These contests happen every January in a place called Ōtsu.
