It is a game of chance. It is very much like bingo. Instead of balls, players use a deck of cards. The traditional deck has 54 cards. Each card shows a picture and a name. Some cards even have a number.

To play, you need a tabla. A tabla is a board with a grid of images. One person is the cantor, or singer. The cantor shuffles the cards. They pick a card and say its name. Sometimes they say a short poem first. Players find the matching picture on their board. They mark it with a chip or a bean. In Mexico, people often use pinto beans or pennies.

You win by making a pattern. You can make a row or a column. You can also make a diagonal line. Some players try to make a square. When you finish a pattern, you shout "Lotería!"

The game has a long history. It started in Italy a long time ago. It came to Mexico in 1769. In 1887, Don Clemente Jacques began making the cards. His designs are now part of Mexican culture.
