It uses a board shaped like a cross. The center is a square called the Charkoni. This is where pieces start and finish.

Two to four people play the game. They use small shells called cowries to move. You throw the shells from your hand. The number of shells facing up tells you how many spaces to move. The name Pachisi comes from the Hindi word for twenty-five. This is the highest score you can get with the shells.

Players use four pieces each. These pieces are often different colors like red, green, black, or yellow. You move your pieces around the board. If you land on an opponent, you capture them. That piece must go back to the start.

Some spots are safe. We call these castle squares. An opponent cannot catch you on these spots. Long ago, kings played this game in huge gardens.
