People often fill them with candy or fruit. During a party, a person hits the piñata with a stick.

Usually, the person wears a blindfold. They might also spin around to make it harder to hit. When the container breaks, the treats fall out for everyone to enjoy.

Piñatas are very popular in Mexico. They are also used in Latin America and the United States. Long ago, people used clay pots for piñatas.

Now, most are made of papier-mâché, which is paper and glue. This is safer for children. Some piñatas look like stars with many points.

Making piñatas is a big job for many families. In some Mexican towns, making them helps people earn money. There are even contests to see who can make the best ones. Some piñatas are even works of art. One contest featured a piñata shaped like a coral reef.
