Often, the person wears a blindfold so they cannot see. They might also be spun around to make the task harder. When the piñata finally breaks, the treats fall out for everyone to enjoy. This tradition brings people together for joy and laughter.

In the past, people used plain clay pots as the base. Today, most makers use papier-mâché, which is made from paper and glue. They often build these shapes over balloons to get the right form. Once the shape is dry, they decorate it with bright crepe paper or tinsel. Some modern piñatas even look like famous characters from movies. This craft is part of a Mexican art style called cartonería.

History shows that many different cultures had similar ideas. Some believe the tradition actually started in China. Those Chinese piñatas looked like cows or oxen for the New Year. They were filled with five types of seeds and hit with colorful sticks. The tradition later moved to Europe in the 14th century. In Mexico, the tradition changed over time.
