Because his home was taken by the Qin state in 239 BC, he fled to the Yan state. There, he met Crown Prince Dan of Yan. The Prince was worried because the Qin army was very strong. The Qin had already conquered the Han state in 230 BC and the Zhao state in 228 BC. Jing Ke became a retainer for the Prince to help protect his land.

Prince Dan and Jing Ke made a very risky plan. They wanted to stop King Zheng of Qin from taking over more land. The plan was for Jing Ke to visit the King as an ambassador. He would bring a map of the Dukang region as a gift. Inside the map scroll, Jing Ke hid a sharp dagger coated in poison.

To make the plan work, they used a man named Fan Yuqi. Fan Yuqi had fled to Yan and wanted revenge against Qin. He agreed to die so his head could be sent as a gift to the King. This would help Jing Ke get close to his target.

In 227 BC, the time came for the mission. Prince Dan and his guests wore white clothes and white hats at the Yi River. This was to send Jing Ke off on his journey. Jing Ke even sang a song about a hero who never returns.

He was joined by an assistant named Qin Wuyang. When they entered the palace in Xianyang, Qin Wuyang felt very nervous. Jing Ke stayed calm and told the King that his partner was simply overwhelmed by the King's greatness. This allowed Jing Ke to approach the throne alone.

As soon as King Zheng unrolled the map, Jing Ke acted. He grabbed the King's sleeve and tried to use the dagger. The King jumped up and pulled his sleeve away to escape.

A royal physician named Xia Wuju threw a medicine bag at Jing Ke. This gave the King time to grab his long ceremonial sword. The King struck Jing Ke in the thigh to stop him. Jing Ke threw his dagger but missed his mark. The King then stabbed Jing Ke several more times, and Jing Ke died.

The plan did not save the Yan state. After the attempt, the Qin general Wang Jian led an army against Yan. Even though King Xi of Yan tried to make peace, the Qin state still conquered Yan.
