Its main city was near modern Beijing. Yan grew to be a very large land. It stretched from the Yellow River to the Yalu River.

Yan was the northernmost state in China. Because of this, it had to stay safe. People built great walls to stop invaders.

This shape helped them trade with people from the north.

Yan had many wars with other states. One rival was the state of Qi. Yan fought many battles to keep its land. Later, a powerful group called Qin came to fight. A man named Jing Ke tried to stop the Qin king. The mission failed. This made the Qin king very angry. The Qin army defeated Yan in 222 BC.

After the Qin fell, Yan was briefly free again. But soon, the Han dynasty took control.
