Taihang Mountains

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Taihang Mountains are in China. They run from north to south. These mountains sit on the edge of the Loess Plateau. They cross through Shanxi, Henan, and Hebei provinces.

Many peaks make up this range. Baishi Mountain is at the north tip. Mount Xiaowutai is the main peak. Mount Cangyan is the peak in the east. The Hai River system flows through the mountains.

These mountains are very old. They formed during the Jurassic period. You can find brown forest soil and cinnamon soils here.

The mountains have played a part in history. Long ago, a group called the Yellow Turbans fought here. Later, the Eighth Route Army held an ambush in the mountains.

People travel through the mountains in many ways. The Red Flag Canal is on the south edge. A fast train travels under the mountains. It uses the Taihang Tunnel. This is the third longest rail tunnel in China. The name Shanxi means "west of the mountains." This is because it sits west of the Taihang range.
