The Greater Khingan is a mountain range. It sits in Northeast China. It is in the Inner Mongolia region. These mountains are volcanic. They run from the north to the south. The slopes are good for grazing animals. Many groups of people lived here. The Khitan people lived on the eastern slopes. They started a ruling family in the tenth century. The Oroqen people live near these mountains too. They are one of the oldest groups in the area. On the western slopes, nomadic people lived. They raised sheep and camels.
