They sit in China and North Korea. The name means "Perpetually-White Mountain Region."

Most peaks in this range are very tall. The highest peak is Paektu Mountain. It has a large lake on top. This is a volcanic crater lake called Heaven Lake. The mountains also start three rivers. These are the Songhua, Tumen, and Yalu Rivers.

Winters here are long and cold. It does not rain much in winter. More rain falls in summer and fall. Many trees grow on the slopes. You can find birch, larch, and pine trees. Higher up, the land is tundra. Tundra is a cold area with little plant life.

Many animals live in these woods. You might see a Siberian tiger or a bear. Wolves and wild boars live there too. Many birds live in the mountains. Some birds are called scaly-sided mergansers. People can also visit the Yabuli Ski Resort to play in the snow.
